The Illinois Lottery launched on July 1, 1974, and initially contributed to the General Revenue Fund. In 1985, a new law directed profits to the Common School Fund, which is still the largest recipient of Lottery support, receiving more than $21 billion to date.
Specialty Tickets have contributed over $53 million to special causes statewide since 2006, including Illinois Veterans' programs; support for breast cancer, MS, Alzheimer's, and HIV/AIDS; Special Olympics training; police memorials; and homelessness prevention.

History of the Illinois Lottery
The Illinois Lottery was established on July 1st, 1974 and started selling lottery tickets on July 30th. The first-ever Illinois Lottery drawing took place on August 8th of that same year. The first instant win games were introduced in 1975 and in 1985 the Illinois Lottery began allocating proceeds to the Common School Fund as opposed to the General Revenue Fund for the state. Illinois was the first state in the country to offer online ticket sales to residents.
Today, the Illinois Lottery transfers revenue raised from ticket sales to a number of good causes, including the Common School Fund, the Capital Projects fund and a number of special initiatives. In the 2013 Fiscal Year, the Lottery raised $793 million for these institutions. In addition, four instant win games are specifically dedicated to raising money for veterans, for those living with HIV/AIDS, breast cancer research and multiple sclerosis research.

In certain rare instances these prizes may be paid on a pari-mutuel basis, and will be lower than these published prize levels. For the jackpot prize, if two or more people match all six winning numbers, that jackpot is shared equally among the winners. After receiving an initial payment shortly after the prize is claimed, the initial jackpot winner(s) will receive their prize in annual installments over a 29-year period unless, within 60 days from the date they claim their prize, they request the cash option method of payment. Power Play® increases non-jackpot prizes only. Note that any set prizes or Power Play prizes, including the Match 5+0 prizes, may be reduced if wins exceed the available prize fund. For a current estimate on the cash amount for Powerball, Mega Millions, and Lotto, contact the Illinois Lottery.
Illinois Lottery Powerball Winning Numbers
Power Play is a special feature that increases the value of prize levels 3 through 9 by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times if a player purchased the Power Play feature. The Power Play number will be randomly drawn at the time of the Powerball drawing. The 10x multiplier is available on initially advertised jackpots of $150 million or less. The Match 5+0 prize doubles to $2,000,000 with Power Play! A player must choose the Power Play option when they buy their Powerball ticket to qualify for the Power Play prizes.
